Steps of Solidarity: Dancing, Learning, and Making a Difference
Tania Laham’s Steps of Solidarity Dabke workshop was an inspiring afternoon of learning, cultural appreciation, and community spirit, all while raising funds for an important humanitarian cause. It was inspiring to participate in this event that brought the community together in support of the people of Lebanon.
Tania shared not only her expertise, but also a lifetime of experience. Having grown up dancing Dabke at family celebrations and later performing with a Dabke troupe during her school years, she brought an authentic perspective that made every part of the workshop meaningful. Her passion for sharing her Lebanese heritage was evident throughout the afternoon, weaving together history, music, traditions, and dance into an engaging and welcoming experience.
Participants of all experience levels felt encouraged and supported. Tania patiently answered questions, carefully broke down each movement, and ensured everyone understood the rhythm before moving on. The workshop covered how to count and feel the music, the foundational steps, stomps, and kicks, along with several variations and embellishments that showcased the joy and energy of this vibrant folk dance.
As if her teaching wasn’t enough, Tania also shared the warmth of Lebanese hospitality by treating participants to homemade lemonade infused with fresh mint from her garden, along with delicious homemade baklava to keep everyone’s energy up. These thoughtful touches made the afternoon feel even more welcoming and memorable.
The workshop was also a tremendous fundraising success. Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended and donated, $1,500 was raised to provide food relief for people impacted by the ongoing bombing in Lebanon. Every registration and donation will help provide much-needed assistance to families facing unimaginable circumstances.
The enthusiasm throughout the afternoon was unmistakable. Participants left smiling, energized, and already asking when they could dance together again. Judging by the response, this is unlikely to be the last Steps of Solidarity workshop. A follow-up event, and perhaps even a semi-regular series, may soon become a reality.
Duniya Studio was honoured to support Tania’s vision and help create an event that celebrated Lebanese culture while making a meaningful difference. Congratulations to Tania Laham, and heartfelt thanks to every participant and donor who helped turn an afternoon of dance into tangible support for those in need.
