Reflections on a Powerful Afternoon of Dance

This past Saturday, June 14, I had the honour of attending a beautiful and deeply meaningful community bellydance recital held at the University of Ottawa’s Academic Hall. Organized with so much care and love by our friend Niki, the event brought together dancers from her fusion classes, the Corazon Bellydance group, and students from our own Duniya Studio classes.

It was a wonderful afternoon filled with joy, emotion, and an incredible mix of dance styles — from fusion bellydance, classic raqs sharqi and ethereal veil, to lively Egyptian Saiidi folklore. The finale included a spirited Lebanese and Palestinian dabke coordinated by some of the dancers from the Duniya Studio Orleans classes. Seeing everyone joining hands and stepping together in rhythm and solidarity was an inspiring moment to witness; all of the performers of a range of different styles were connected, dancing not just for themselves, but for something much bigger.

What made this recital even more special was its purpose: to raise funds for Islamic Relief Canada and their work supporting families in Gaza and across Palestine. The money raised will go toward emergency relief (food, medical care, clean water, and shelter).

I’m so proud of every dancer who took the stage, and grateful to everyone who came to support. Thank you, Niki, for your vision, your work organizing the event, and for reminding us that dance can be a powerful form of resistance, healing, and hope.
