Add Rhythm to Your Dance: Sagat Workshop This June

There is something powerful about dancing while creating your own rhythm.

On Tuesday, June 16 at 7:00 PM, Jocelyne Khan of Duniya Studio will be teaching a special 1.5-hour Sagat (finger cymbals) workshop at the Shenkman Arts Centre dance studio.

Sagat, also known as zills or finger cymbals, are a traditional instrument in Bellydance. They are small, but they have a big impact. When you play them confidently, your dancing becomes more grounded, musical, and expressive.

This workshop will focus on:

  • Clean, clear sound production
  • Foundational rhythm patterns
  • Coordination drills for hands and feet
  • Simple travelling and in-place combinations
  • Strategies for building speed and stamina

If you have ever felt intimidated by zills, you are not alone. Many dancers avoid them because they feel awkward at first. This workshop breaks everything down step-by-step so you can build skill in a supportive, focused setting. Handout of specially-developed practice exercises included!

The class is limited to 25 participants to allow for individual attention. The fee is $40.

Don’t have finger cymbals? No problem; they will be available for purchase at the workshop.

Come ready to challenge your brain, wake up your rhythm, and add a powerful new layer to your Bellydance practice.
