Duniya Studio

About Duniya Studio

Duniya Studio is Ottawa’s home for Middle Eastern and related dance arts. We cultivate a warm, welcoming space where people of all backgrounds can discover movement, music, and community.

The word Duniya translates to “world” or “life” in several languages, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Hindi, and Urdu. For us, this name reflects the richness of culture, artistry, and connection that dance brings into our lives.

What We Teach

At Duniya Studio, our focus is on Raqs Sharqi (bellydance), along with folkloric and social dances from Southwest Asia and North Africa. Regular classes range from beginner (level 1) to advanced (level 4), allowing dancers to grow their skills in:

  • Technique & Foundations – posture, isolations, traveling steps, and musicality
  • Folkloric & Regional Styles – including Saidi, Baladi, and more
  • Performance Skills – stage presence, choreography, and improvisation
  • Cultural Context – learning the music, history, and traditions that shape the dances

Our Roots

Duniya Studio began with the first classes taught by Jocelyne, Cathy, and Taheya in downtown Ottawa. From those modest beginnings, we grew to serve communities in Nepean, Kanata, and Orléans; bringing dance across the city and building a vibrant community along the way.

Over the years, we have also hosted:

  • Workshops with renowned guest instructors from across Canada and abroad
  • Intensive sessions on topics such as body technique, folkloric styles, improvisation, rhythms, and stagecraft
  • Community events including haflas in local restaurants, cultural bazaars, and studio showcases

These gatherings have created not only a space for learning, but also a home for celebration, friendship, and artistic growth.
